All Online Schools

Information Architecture, Site Design

All Online Schools is a directory for online degree programs from accredited colleges and universities. The first (also previous) version of the website lacked editorial content that would provide optimal search engine ranking, thus a complete overhaul of the site was requested. The site demonstrates the motivation of others by answering the question “Why do you want an online degree?” then engages users with “What’s your motivation?”

More than just a pretty face-lift

Completing an overhaul of All Online Schools required more than designing page templates. With the inclusion of editorial content on the site, the existing directory structure required a new flow for use of the company’s CMS tool. I asked the project manager to include the developers in our IA conversations so everyone could be on the same page with the new site structure.

I asked the product manager for a creative brief before I started initial design concepts. In addition to understanding the desired target audience, I wanted primary and secondary messaging for the site. We produced a motivation concept: present users with “snapshots” of professional men and women who bettered their lives through continuing education. The site would randomly display a snapshot of a person along with a reason why he/she chose an online degree.

The wireframes and site design were combined into hi-fidelity wireframes that demonstrated navigation, grid layout, typography, and color palette. Iterations of the wireframes were rapid and could easily be sent to the developers for production of core pages and page templates.
